Ahi Shoyu Poke

I love a dish that takes me less than 20 minutes to prepare. Ahi Shoyu Poke is a favorite of mine, thanks to its simplicity and straightforward steps. Many poke shops have been popping up in our area, which has fueled my love for this Hawaiian delight.

Poke is a Hawaiian word that means “to cut into parts.” It’s one of the most simple dishes you can make. It takes only a few minutes to cut the fish fillet into small cubes; then, you can add your favorite poke seasonings to the delicious morsels.

Ingredient notes

  • Tuna – Use sashimi-grade, high-quality yellowtail or ahi tuna.
  • Nuts – Poke includes toasted kukui and candle nuts. The macadamia nuts are easier to find in our recipe.
  • Salt-Traditionally seasoned with Alaea. This Hawaiian sea salt has been mixed with red volcanic Clay. It can be ordered online or substituted pink Himalayan salt for regular sea salt.
  • Onions– Use Maui onions. They have a sweeter and less intense taste due to their high water content.
  • Yellow Onions– For color and fresh taste
  • Seasonings – this recipe uses sesame oil and freshly grated ginger. Common add-ins for boosting flavor are ponzu sauce, furikake, dried chili pepper flakes, and fish eggs (roe).

Quick Tip

This is a raw dish that doesn’t require cooking. I cannot stress enough how important it is to use high-quality ingredients. Get your fish from a trusted vendor to ensure food safety and the best results.

Serving suggestions

Tuna poke can be served as an appetizer or an entree over sushi rice. This island staple is a must-try if you like raw fish’s vibrant, fresh flavor and soft, velvety texture.

Instructions for storage

Keep the fish chilled until you are ready to use it. Tuna should be dressed just before you serve it. This will ensure that the dish is as fresh and delicious as possible.
