Baked French Toast

This is the easiest recipe for baked French toast you’ll ever make. This recipe is perfect for brunch, with no overnight wait (unless you want to). What makes my French toast unique from the rest? Let’s call this Fancy French Bread Toast. I add a French baguette sliced into pieces to give it a more elegant touch.

French bread is dense, soft and chewy inside. It has a firmer exterior that adds texture to the whole dish. It tastes exactly like maple syrup and fried dough. This is easily one of our favourite weekend recipes!

French Toast Overnight or Instant

You can either bake this recipe in under an hour or overnight. I prefer to allow the bread to soak up the egg/milk mixture before adding it to the oven. If you like your French toast firmer, I recommend not soaking it overnight. This recipe makes soft bread, but it isn’t soggy or mushy.

This recipe can be used to revive stale bread. Allow to soak for longer, or even overnight, if this is the case.

How to bake French Toast?

Cut French bread into 1-inch slices. Please place them in a skillet with the top facing. Spread the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract and whisked egg over the bread. Allow to soak for 30 minutes, then bake for 40 minutes.

I understand what you are thinking. If the bread isn’t soaked up, will it result in scrambled eggs at the bottom of my skillet? Is that a good thing? No. You won’t. To ensure that each slice is fully saturated, you can flip the bread at the end of the soak. It’s not necessary, I’ll admit.

My French toast is best served with blueberries and powdered Sugar. Mimosas and bloodys are mandatory.

Skillets of 12 Inch and 10 Inches

This recipe will fit in a 12-inch or 10-inch cast iron skillet. You may need to cut the bread thicker if you have a smaller skillet. For larger pans, use 1-inch slices and 1.5-inch for 10-inch skillets. If the pan is already stuffed, it’s okay. This recipe can be prepared in a regular baking dish or pie plate.

I am sharing the easiest French toast recipe that you’ll ever bake. This recipe is perfect for crowds and requires no overnight preparation. It is made with French bread and is dusted with brown/powdered Sugar. It tastes just like fried dough with maple syrup.

Baked French Toast

Ingredients

  • Three eggs, beaten
  • Salt – pinch
  • 1 cup milk (1 cup whole or 2%)
  • Maple syrup (Don’t Forget This)
  • One teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • One tablespoon of brown Sugar
  • One teaspoon of powdered Sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Blueberries as toppings (optional)
  • 1 lb (16 oz.) French bread baguette cut into 1-inch slices

Preparation Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F
  2. Slice the bread into slices and place face-up in a baking dish or greased skillet. Make sure to pack as tightly as you can, with no overlap. If you make slightly thicker pieces (just below 1.5 inches), it will be nearly possible to fit in a 10-inch cast iron skillet.
  3. In a bowl, combine whisked egg with milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, salt, and Sugar. Mix well and spread evenly on the bread. Sprinkle the brown Sugar over each slice.
  4. Allow the bread to rest for 30-60 minutes. It is okay if the skillet has some egg/milk mixture. As the bread bakes, it will soak in.
  5. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The bread should be crisp on top. Sprinkle with blueberries and powdered Sugar. Finally, drizzle maple syrup all over the top.
  6. Serve immediately

Note

If you wish, this can be prepared and left to soak overnight. Prepare the skillet and place it in the fridge. Cover the skillet with aluminium foil. Allow the skillet to cool on the counter for about 15-20 minutes before baking. Bake for 45 minutes or until the top turns golden and is slightly crispy.
